Key speakers

Professor Dirk Trauner
was born and grew up in Linz, Austria. After studying biology and then biochemistry at the University of Vienna, he joined Professor Johann Mulzer's group at the Free University of Berlin to pursue natural products synthesis. In the late 1990s, he was a postdoctoral fellow with Professor Samuel J. Danishefsky at the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York City.
In 2000, Dirk joined the University of California, Berkeley, where he rose through the ranks to become an Associate Professor of chemistry. In summer of 2008, he moved to the University of Munich, where he currently resides as a Professor for Chemical Biology and Genetics. His research interests range from organic reactions and natural products to molecular machines, ion channels, and neurons.

Lisbet Kværnø, PhD
Lisbet Kværnø, born in Denmark, received her M.Sc. in chemistry from the University of Copenhagen under Prof. Jesper Wengel. She obtained her PhD in 2004 after working in total synthesis at the Technical University of Denmark under Professor David Tanner and in medicinal chemistry at the ETH Zurich supervised by Professor Erick M. Carreira.
As a postdoctoral fellow in the research group of Professor David A. Evans at Harvard University, she completed the total synthesis of the marine natural product (+)-azaspiracid. After a brief period as an independent junior group leader at the Max Planck Institute of Coal Research in Muelheim, Germany, she joined Lundbeck in Copenhagen as a process chemist in the late summer of 2008.
Together with Prof. Erick M. Carreira, she co-authored the book Classics in Stereoselective Synthesis (Wiley-VCH, 2008).

Professor Andrei Yudin
Professor Andrei K. Yudin obtained his B.Sc. degree at Moscow State University and his Ph.D. degree at the University of Southern California under the direction of Professors G. K. Surya Prakash and George A. Olah. He subsequently took up a postdoctoral position in the laboratory of Professor K. Barry Sharpless at the Scripps Research Institute.
In 1998, he started his independent career at the University of Toronto. He received early tenure, becoming an Associate Professor in 2002, and received an early promotion to the rank of a Full Professor in 2007. Dr. Yudin is one of the pioneers in the design of new chemical transformations. Currently, the main focus of research in the Yudin group is to develop a bridge between basic chemistry research and drug discovery.
In addition to significant fundamental discoveries, his lab is making tangible contributions to chemical industry. In 2009, Sigma-Aldrich used his method and created a wide range of reagents now known as the Yudin amino aldehydes. These powerful molecules are being used to solve some of the long-standing problems of complex molecule synthesis. Dr. Yudin and his students
